Individual therapy (psychotherapy or counselling) is a process through which clients work one-on- one with a psychologist or counsellor- in a safe, caring and confidential environment.
The therapist helps the client explore and understand feelings, beliefs and behaviours as well as identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change and become better at helping themselves in their everyday lives.
Therapy helps clients understand themselves and others better, helps clients see their problem situation from a different perspective and feeling more able to get to grips with it, set personal goals and work towards personal growth.
People seek therapy for a variety of reasons: -major life changes -trauma and childhood trauma -depression -anxiety -personal growth -grief -relationship conflict -addiction -stress management.
Your experience of counselling will begin with a single session in which you and your therapist work together to make sense of your experience, to conceptualise your problem situation in new ways and think together how you might move forward. Some problems are more complex than others and this will determine whether short or long term therapy is beneficial.
